The limbic-prefrontal loop is what makes a child available for learning when the day is hard.

We start with the sentence the rest of the module depends on.

That is the most important sentence in this module. The limbic-prefrontal loop is not a personality module, not a measure of how 'sensitive' a child is, and not the part of the brain that decides whether to feel something. It is the regulatory loop that holds the threshold for dysregulation, recovers the child to baseline after an affective event, and protects executive function when the day puts pressure on the system. When it operates efficiently, the child looks 'resilient.' When it does not, the cost is paid one block ended early, one morning lost to a recess conflict, one day where the same student who held three-step directions yesterday cannot hold one today.

The PSOF framework

PSOF organizes pediatric sensorimotor observation into nine canonical neurodevelopmental domains. The limbic-prefrontal domain is the most directly adjacent to the Frontal module — both produce executive failure, but the underlying constraint is different. Frontal fails on baseline executive capacity, regardless of affect. Limbic-prefrontal fails on the regulatory loop that protects executive function under affective load.

Constraint-based readiness

The Constraint-Based Medicine framework holds that adaptive systems must demonstrate readiness before exposure to increased demand. When the limbic-prefrontal loop is the constraint, the demand of productive struggle, peer interaction, and corrective feedback lands on a regulatory system that cannot reliably hold the threshold or recover from the event. Pep talks, resilience language, and motivation charts all assume a regulatory loop that can act on the message. When that assumption is wrong, more encouragement does not produce a more regulated child. It produces a child who feels obligated to perform resilience. This module trains you to see the constraint underneath the 'sensitive kid' file.
